I have found that one must be ruthless with clutter!! If it doesn't bring you JOY -- it goes. (Someone else may want to use it... so take to Goodwill.)

    maybe these will help!

3 piles... 1 pile to donate, 1 for trash, 1 for keep (Only if I've used it in the last 12 months and I it.)

  • One room or area at a time. Getting rid of stuff feels good. Donate what is usable and throw away the rest. If you can't decide, put it in a box. If after 6 months, you haven't needed it, get rid of it.

Unfortunately, you can't hold a history class on ever piece you have. You will never ever finish if you do that. Pic out 8 things in a room you can't part with (this includes furniture, pictures and paintings and accessories NO MORE THAN 8 PIECES) . Now, get unemotional and go to it. Or, perhas, if you have children, ask them to come and take what they want, excluding the 8 pieces from each room. Yes, it does feel good and what you give away is a blessing to you and them.

I cleared three rooms of my hoarder Dad's house with his knowledge and consent. (as long as I didn't throw away books, tools, or tapes and Dvds). It works best to take everything out of one room. You might be able to take things outside to sort as I did, or you may have to move clutter to another room. Deal with each item (keep, donate/sell, trash)and move on to the next item. Haul items away or discard immediately! When the first room is clean, move clutter from next room into empty room. I didn't like cluttering the empty room with stuff from other rooms, so I was able to get rid of more and more stuff. Clean the rooms and rearrange your favorite saved possessions after the entire house is done. Then follow the one item in/ one item out rule. Then enjoy having an organized manageable home.

"Everything in its place and a place for every thing" is a long time mantra.

If you can't make a space inside a drawer/closet, atop a shelf/shelving unit (horizontally or vertically), then something has to go. Select your favorite item for that space and sell or donate what's left.

Fold laundry as soon as the dryer cycle is complete. Sometimes creative folding will make a towel better fit a shelf. Think outside the box.

Place suit jackets and slacks on 1 hanger. Blouses and vests together. Multiple pairs of slacks will fit on 1 heavier hanger, as will two skirts.

Shoes in boxes stack much easier and consume less space.

Painting items together in a see thru bin, in garage or on basement shelving.

Sewing items together. Threads together by size in see thru bins with spindles.

Needlework materials together, all hidden from view, in a closet!

Workshop tools on pegboards or in tool boxes. Nails, etc. in lockable see through cases, by size.

Cut back on linens, sets of table cutlery, dishware, cookware, unless you have adequate storage.

Organize your pantry and maintain it that way. Drinks together, tomato products together, baking items together, etc.

All Holiday wraps stored in tall baskets, roped together. Add bows, bags, ribbons to another see thru bin or basket. Keep wraps for all other occasions separate from Holiday wraps.

Don't purchase more spices, condiments, etc.than you can use in 6 months, and so on.

Mail is reviewed as it comes in and junk mail is immediately thrown out. Each family member has their own mail bin, to be reviewed before bedtime.
