How do I update my complete oak wood paneling and bookshelves?

my home was built in 1983 I want to update my living room but do not want to devalue my home by just painting my fireplace bricks and oak wood paneling! How should I do this? Donna

If paint is not an option you could consider sanding your trim down and restaining it in a different wood stain.

I used a really good primer first. ( very important) . Then I used a thick nap roller, so I didn't have to do all those paneling lines separate. You have to use the primer ! If you don't, you will see every little scratch. The paint will not stay on. Mine has been on 7 years. no problems

If this is “real oak paneling” the custom kind built with raised panels and board and batten, i wouldnt touch it. If it is sheet paneling you certainly won’t devalue the house by removing it. I can’t imagine anyone would want 80’s paneling. Removing it would probably INCREASE the value.
