How do I organize & put away my Christmas stuff?

Every year I create another box of Christmas that I put up. Gifts received, cards, decorations, ornaments, etc. I just don’t organize very well.

  • Drag it all out and sort it properly. Like with like. Purchase plastic tubs with lids that stack easily for more compact storage in the least amount of space. They are all on sale everywhere in January. It just takes a bit of time and focus. Once you have a tub filled, write down what is in it and place on top. Once you fill your tubs store away. Easy!

You might want to start with a purge. Most gifts received are a replacement or update of an item. I am working on a 1 in - 2 out rule.

Look at the area you have to store items and use that as your "maximum capacity" rule.

The plastic tubs as suggested by Naomie are good. You need to make sure that you have tubs that have lids sturdy enough to hold the weight of other tubs if you are going to stack. Shelves would be much better. I recommend labeling the tubs or putting a packing slip with them if there is a variety of item types.

It's a very daunting task. Good luck!

Great suggestions. I found that as my son aged, I decided to put up fewer decorations. I did a purge and donated things I no longer needed/wanted to a homeless shelter. My nephew also was happy to go through things as he was establishing his first home.

I use really large storage tubs with lids. One for everything soft, like Christmas throw pillows, throws, tree skirt, bath towels, kitchen towels and tablecloth...all items used only at Christmas. I put a cube vacuum storage bag inside the tub, place the items inside, then vacuum all the air out of it.

Another tub is used for everything that goes on the tree and items used for Christmas decorating (candle holders, figurines, etc).

Yet another is used to store my Christmas greens (wreaths, garlands, etc). Another for Christmas lights. All tubs are marked on the outside, soft stuff, tree, greens, etc., with the label taped to the side of the tub so I can see when they're stacked, which one I'm looking for.

Go thru and sort out all your Christmas decorations then purchase as many see thru plastic bins with lids that are stackable that you will need. I purposely don't buy a lot of Christmas decorations year to year for this very reason because I don't have the room or want to waste space storing them all year long just to display them only for a month for the holidays. Then organize items and store fragile in one box, lights in another and so on. When the holidays roll around again it will be so much more easier to find everything and decorate. The plastic bins are see thru so you will be able to find what you are looking for too.
