How do paint bare wood?

Hi Trudy, I actually just read that if you’re painting New unpainted wood, you don’t need primer but, anything else DOES need 1. tinted primer 2. Latex paint (satin or gloss) 3. Clear coat of choice for high traffic/activity. Oh, and always sand if only lightly and wipe before 1.

this is advice from one who prefers latex over chalk paint, hands down...

Using a primer is beneficial because it gives the top coat more durability. Primer acts as a strong base for the other paint to stick to. I find that using a primer ensures a more clean, smooth, consistent finish, and also makes the colour of the top coat pop!

However, all if this also depends on the type of paint you're planning on using. For example, if you're going to use something like milk or chalk paint, primer usually isn't necessary!
