How do I find the best material for a sofa that doesn't snag or pill?

The fabric on our current set (about 4 years old) has pilled up and snagged from pets but also from people sitting on it. Our previous set was faux leather and the cat's put little nail holes in it when they ran across. Has anyone discovered the perfect sofa material that can handle pets and people??
If I had my druthers, I would have a tapestry type fabric. I have an antique chair covered in a hideous tapestry that either my mom or one of my grandmother's chose. There are many pets in this house and even they didn't destroy it. I have had good luck with ultasuede and microfiber fabrics. Cats claws didnt show. My personal preference is for a polished cotton, but can be problematic with cats depending on the pattern selected. If busy enough, you can't see their claw marks.
