How do I decide if I need a walk-in tub?

  • Completely a personal choice. My dream shower is a walk in with a bench and a separate soaking tub. I can see the need, but they are somewhat inconvenient as if you have a door and fill it up, you have to sit there and wait until the tub drains to get up and get out.

Hello John! If you are doing a bathroom remodel and are elderly or about to be elderly--then installing a walk in shower is not a bad idea. It's easier than climbing into a tub for a bath or shower. If you can make it wheel chair accessible--better yet! Installing a walk in shower may be a NEED in certain situations. If you plan on selling your home a nicely done walk in shower is great as long as you have another bathroom with a tub in it. Buyers like walk in showers but they also like to have a tub available. A master bathroom that has both is a plus. Whether you WANT one or not is up to you!

if you want one, only you can decide. If you need one is a matter of just that do you need it or will soon.

    Hi, John,

Kohler makes a faster draining walk in tub, but it is quite costly. If you ever have to move, consider the resale potential for this item vs. a standard tub with a 14 inch step over, which is more attractive to buyers with small children.

You can always have more contemporary grab bars installed at the side, front, and rear of the tub to facilitate entering and exit, with an LED light above the tub for better visibility and an upgraded bath exhaust fan with LED lighting.

Have you considered a large walk in shower with a larger seating area? If you consider this, know that it is important to consider the door swing angle entering the tub. It is important that it be capable of swinging outward, in the event of an emergency, so that other persons can assist you.

There are less expensive solutions for elderly or disabled people who can step over a 6inch step. It is a cut in your tub and comes with or without a plug so you can bathe or shower. With a shower chair and grab bars this is a very safe option. Clean-cut has a few styles. We chose without top plug.
