How can I wash my walls covered in vinyl wallpaper?

How do l wash my walls ? THE Covering is Vinyl wallpaper,! they are covered with black soot from the furnace pipes, Its very fine black dust on white walls!!,, l am trying to find a very good solution to use to remove this grit!! Thank you.

A vinegar water solution might work too. Play doh was originally invented to remove soot from the walls, did you know that?
Most soot is greasy. Use a product that is a degreaser or you will have smears on your wall. A solution of TSP (found in the paint department) will work. I'd start with a vinegar/water solution with a squirt of blue Dawn dish soap and work up to TSP if the vinegar/water/Dawn solution doesn't work.
