If you are talking about a wall switch that goes to a fan, then it would be just like any other wall switch. However, if you are talking about the switch built into the fan housing, then you will need to find a replacement switch. In that case it may be cheaper to find a new fan unit. I bought 3 fans/lights for my new house (about $100 each). The contractor installed a single switch from wall to a cheap overhead light (with a fan-capable ceiling box). I removed those lights and replaced it with the ceiling/fan combo. There is a remote control that operates the light and fan speeds.
