Chalk paint, CHANGE hardware. Ombre it from top to bottom adding color a bit darker. Add a bit more white to your bottom color with each drawer and the top will be the lightest.
Pick a color from your décor, chalk paint it and darken or distress the edges.
I had the exact same secretary, it is solid maple, probably. You can bring out the beauty of the wood by some gentle sanding. Then use a 50/50 combination of Minwax Sedona Red / Red Oak oil base stain. Pre-treat with Minwax wood conditioner. It doesn't have to be perfect, because it's vintage. Topcoat with Minwax Fast-Drying oil based Polyurethane, 2 coats, satin finish (after the first coat dries, lightly sand with 220 grit.) It will surprise you how it comes back to life! Cup handle pulls will be the finishing touch, in my opinion. Good Luck! That is quite a find.
Remove the hardware. Clean it well with vinegar water to remove any dirt. I would paint the inside with primer to protect it better. Prime the outside if you're painting it white. Then paint it. I like chalk paint because it's easy to use and very forgiving. Apply your coats, letting them dry thoroughly in between coats. Then apply your top coat. I like polycrylic because it's easy to use and doesn't yellow over time.
Try painting it with Heirloom Traditions paint-All in One, chalk-like paint. It primes, paints amd seals. You can check it out on their website or they are on Facebook as well.
I love wood and dislike chalk paint as it chips with use. I personally would paint the body with Valspar furniture paint (I LOVE it!!). It's self leveling! Remove (and replace) hardware. I would then strip the top and front and drawers. Fill hardware holes then sand sand sand. Stain and seal the wood. I personally would like the inside box of the Secretary stained too. Good luck!
Here’s mine redone with spray painting original hardware with oil rubbed bronze and turquoise chalk paint. Sanded it first, painted it with Klize. Painted it with home made turquoise chalk paint, then distressed the finish. Have fun creating your masterpiece.

I like to put wallpaper in the bottom of the drawers instead of painting the inside.
