How can I remove Popcorn ceilings without a big mess?

I hate the Popcorn ceilings in my house and really can't afford to pay someone else to remove them! Can it be a DYI project and if so , what is the easiest and safest way to do it? Thanks

Danny Lipford on a DYI Saturday morning showed how to do this. I think he has a website. Looked fairly easy- hot water and a fabric softner- sounds funny- but turned out well

Easy Peasy just messy and time consuming. First, wear a mask as many old popcorn ceilings have fiberglass in them. Lay down a tarp, spray a section of the ceiling with water, let it soak in a bit then scrape the wet popcorn off. Be careful as you scrape as you do not want to dig into the wallboard under the popcorn texture.

You can get rid of a popcorn ceiling yourself, but its not going to be without a big mess. They are just a messy removal job. Depending on the age of your house, you might want to make sure there is no asbestos in it. Here is a tutorial that might help you.
