How do I update this coffee table?

Here is a sofa table that I painted and did this interesting decoupage treatment to the top!

You can paint it, add mosaics to it, decopage and add glass. Look at different coffee table projects and get ideas.

Is that solid wood or a veneer? If solid wood you can sand it down and refinish it. Veneer layers are so thin it is easy to sand too much and ruin it. In that case perhaps a few coats of paint.

I would simply paint the top in white and the legs in a colour that ressembles

pine wood. As for those battered edges, I would distress them with a darker colour so it looks like it is suppose to be like that.

Asking same as Mogie is it veneer,solid wood or laminate covered? Veneer can buckle sometimes if painted need to remove it,same with laminate. You could cut new wood & cover it. You could sand prime,paint. You could sand,stain,seal. You could decoupage old maps,napkins,brown paper bags many things on top then seal. You could cover with piece of leather,you could tile/mosaic.

I just seen the greatest idea for a round table top.....turn it into one of those large wall clocks.

You can fill in the gouged areas with wood putty and sand, then paint. Paint the top one color and the legs a different color: charcoal top with white legs, mustard yellow top with charcoal legs, or do the legs in a metallic.

What a fantastic mid-century piece! If it is real wood veneer, you might consider having it professionally repaired to maintain value of what, at this point, qualifies as an antique. If it is a synthetic material like laminate, putty and paint would be a great option. If painting laminate, you will need to sand to degloss, use a good primer, and then paint. If you want it to withstand use without the need for coasters and such, top the paint with a good, non-yellowing finish like a car clear coat. Alternatively, you could remove the old laminate and glue on new laminate. Personally, I adore mid-century modern and would seek out one of the retro laminate patterns from that era like the atom designs or star bursts or gold flecks and I would spray paint the legs to coordinate with the new laminate if they are in bad shape. Otherwise, I would just clean up the legs and keep them as is.

I can't tell from the pics if it is walnut. Def midcentury lines. This is what I would do:

1) Use heat gun or hair dryer and plastic tool to scrape of sides. Lightly sand. Then look at the top of the table from the side and see if the top is also a veneer. You could paint it either way. But, if it looks like real wood, use some Howards Restoration Products to bring back the wood.

2) I also think you might be able to use marble contact paper on the top for a little more Wow.
