Lace Painted Kids Desk

When my sister asked for a cool kid desk for my niece, Sprite as we call her, I knew that I had to try to come up with the coolest kid desk in the history of kid desks. My niece is cute and sassy with a punk edge so I wanted to create a girly "lace painted" desk with some super punchy colors and color blocked legs. Using a $10 yard sale find, I used 2 different colors and some swirly lace to complete this project.
The super cute and color coordinated Sprite and her new desk!
This brown desk was not pretty but very sturdy with a drawer and sliding side tray. It was much easier to work on the desk with the legs detached from the desktop - a few bolts on the bottom secured the legs and it was fairly easy to detach the legs from the desktop. I used Citristrip to remove the poly and paint and then sanded before painting.
This Valspar paint called Cathedral Stone was the perfect under color to balance out the bright purple accent color. And it was on sale - score!
After the initial paint had dried, I taped off 8" from the bottom of each leg with Frogtape.
Using a Valspar spray paint, I color blocked the legs. It took 2 coats to achieve the look I wanted. I recommend spraying downward from the gray but you may have some over spray and will need to do some touching up.
Be sure to use Frogtape above the 8" section!
This super cool swirly lace fabric was a Jo-Ann Fabrics find. I wanted the lace to be more modern for Sprite. I laid the lace onto the desktop and taped underneath while pulling the fabric tight. Using the same purple spray paint, I sprayed lightly over the lace. Tip: make sure to tape the lace because the moisture from the spray will cause the fabric to wrinkle.
Remove the lace carefully immediately after spraying or the lace will wrinkle from the moisture and smudge your paint.
I wanted to add a few details to the sliding tray but didn't want to overwhelm the project with the lace detail.
The finished product in all of it's lace detail glory! Check out the full tutorial on my blog, The Charming Farmer.

Great job. She looks really happy with her desk. I bet she loves it all through school and if it will fit she will want it in her dorm room !
