Are you asking about adding a former or utilize the space in attic? Do you already have a full set of stairs to the space?

First you'll have to hire a contractor, or Interior designer that does archetectual drawings to figure out your stairs and livable space in attic. Get building permits etc. That's how you start.

The answer depends on your roof. You need to make sure the roof can support however much weight you intend to add. The current building has ceiling/roof joists intended to hold only the roof materials, mechanicals such as AC and the occasional worker. 1000 board feet of lumber could add close to 2,000 lbs.

Most cities require permits for all additions to existing buildings, some projects may also require an engineer's expertise, and some cities require building to be done by licensed professionals. Failing to get a permit can cause the project to be delayed and fines assessed.
