Hi Marianne. I'm Cindy. Begin this job by mixing the can of stain well. You should wear a pair of gloves for this job. Next, dip a clean cloth in the stain and rub it on your cabinet. Work it in with the grain of the wood. Do this until the entire cabinet is coated with the stain. Allow the stain to dry thoroughly between coats. You can put as many coats of stain on as you would like. The more coats, the darker the stain. Then apply a waterproof sealer to protect your cabinet. Since it's going in the bathroom, I recommend putting on several coats of sealer. Allow the sealer to dry in between coats. Wishing you all the best.

Birch would more easily replicate a cherry finish, but because there are many shades of cherry, be aware that you may need to custom blend stain colors to attain the same color as the vanity.

We rescued an unfinished computer hutch that had been used as a chicken coop with just alot of cleaning and Minwax Polyshades which is a polyurethane with wood stain. It took several coats to get the Mahogany/ Cherry deep enough and I sanded and wiped it with a tack cloth between coats for an extra smooth finish. It was easier than traditional refinishing.

I have used it over golden oak cabinets to darken them to match. You might find an old oak medicine cabinet and experiment. Just make sure to clean and dry it well.
