How/what would you use instead of mulch in flower beds?

I have a flower bed on a slope with several hostas, couple of ferns, a hydrangea, and a few small misc plants. Problem is my mulch keeps sliding over the borders and the weeds can get thick. It is not a flower bed I venture into during summer and early fall for various reasons. I am looking for ideas on ground cover, real or artificial, other than mulch.

How about river rocks or "Mexican beach pebbles" they come in various sizes.

A 4" deep layer of long pine needles will suppress weed growth and remain intact much longer than hardbark mulch. Because it is porous, rain gets through, but for whatever reason, weeds do not.
