How do I remove and replace ceramic tile flooring in my home?

The ceramic tile that is in my house is so uneven and looks terrible. what is the cheapest way to remove it (if that's my only option)and cheapest flooring to put down after that? I would appreciate any input anyone has

If you want new flooring, then you have no choice but to remove the old lumpy floor. Landsharkinnc provided excellent resources on how to remove.
Sheet vinyl is hands down the cheapest flooring. But before you say no, go visit a flooring showroom, it's not the same as what was sold in the 50's and 60's. Easy to maintain and takes a beating. Vinyl planks are another option.
Consider your lifestyle and family. Kids? Pets? Elderly? What is your climate? Cold and snowy or mild and temperate? Many like laminate floors. I am not one of those people. I replaced with hardwood.
Shop around a bit, you might find another option that fits in your budget.
Being in the business for years, it depends on what's underneath it. If its cement board you will have to take it up also. Just start at an edge and see if you can pry it up. Also if there is a vent pull the vent and see if you can tell what kind of layers are there. If it is on concrete slab just start breaking it with a hammer. If it is installed badly it might just pop up. You will have to make sure that you clean all the mortar off of your floor before you install something else. That is going to be your big hurdle. You can try a self leveler if you get most of the mortar up. Sometimes people use mastic which may or may not come up easily. You can buy scrapers. You won't know until you start the job. It's impossible to predict how this is going to go before you get started. As far as lowest maintenance product on the market, it is by far luxury vinyl wood strip. Ya sheet vinyl is the cheapest but it is not an easy install and usually requires luan on crawl space or feather finish on concrete. You can get vinyl lock together strips. Do not confuse this with laminate. It is not the same. Luxury vinyl strip also needs a smooth floor but is more forgiving than sheet vinyl and if you damage one strip you can pop it out and replace it and is meant to be an easy DIY.
