How do I fill in low places in a yard where water stands?

purchase 'fill dirt' and add 'top soil' to the 'top' once it has settled and found it's own 'level' -- many landscape companies or greenhouse growers sell top soil, contractors and builders may have contacts for 'fill dirt' ... don't get in hurry --- it may take months for the fill to settle an reach the desired 'level' --

just be sure that filling in this depression doesn't create water flowing towards an area that would be worse -- like into your home or outbuildings, or onto your neighbors property ...

-do you have a lot of those spaces or just one area-you could just plant water loving plants for a spectacular garden

I'd put down some gravel or coarse pebbles then add soil. You may also want to work with the areas instead of trying to fill them in. A rain garden would be a great idea in such a place.

You cannot fight water flow. May be best just to make trench and have water flow away from area entirely,directing where you want it to go away from house. There is basically already place it's settling(trench) so just need to tidy it up line edges with rock then fill with gravel & or plants to absorb water or cut down on flow of it. As landsharkinnc says filling it in may create another problem altogether it's gotta flow somewhere. Only other option is stop water from entering yard by installing french drains underground to direct water saturation to flow away instead of settling in your yard. french drains help with ground saturation trenches help with water flow.
