I have a dark brown leather chair that hubby wore down to a tear about 3 inches long on the left arm from his OCD. To replace, repair, or reupholster was simply too expensive so I decided to go cheaper. You can find duct tape in many colors and I found the exact same brown to cover the tear. If you plan to reupholster in leather you are risking a very good amount of money, believe me. I would use a professional and it still will be expensive. I had reupholstered a couch, loveseat, and chair some years ago to make my family room more country style. There are patterns available wherever patterns are sold. Also be advised that leather furniture is not made the same as fabric covered furniture. For one thing my leather furniture does not have removable cushions.

You can buy leather and vinyl repair kits in auto parts store or auto department of the big box stores.

If you opt to reupholster with a very good grade of leather, prepare yourself for sticker shock.

Top quality leather is not meant for smokers, studs in jeans, jewelry with jagged edges, shoes, drinks or food, excessive sun or cold.

If you can't control these issues, opt for an inexpensive grade of "leather" or recover with an upholstery grade fabric.

Top quality leather furniture makers give you the option of additional padding/batting, removeable, zippered covers, specialized trims, etc., but again, it's exceedingly costly and not advised for the average family's use.
