How can I remove the sticky feeling on the counter near the range?

I recently moved to an older house and the area near the range built into the counter has a sticky feel. I have used heavy duty detergent and scrubbed it but it still feels sticky. What can I use to cut the sticky stuff on the counter?

Goo Gone gets my vote. A little soapy water after using the Goo Gone will be your final step.
Ammonia works well or try some Dawn with a scrub brush.
I have had great success with Mean Green. It is a degreaser. I use it, slightly diluted, and spray the area. Let it sit for a few minutes to work. Then clean the area thoroughly. Assuming the countertop is laminate. Don't think you are supposed to use it on painted surfaces, so read label first.
scrape it off with straight edge razor w then scrub with degreaser,Dawn dish & really hot water
Sprinkle baking soda on sticky area & use a spray bottle filled with vinegar & a drop or two of Dawn. Spray on the baking soda & let it sit a few minutes. Use a scrub brush to scrub well. Wipe off the mixture & wipe down with a damp sponge. This usually works really well.

use Dawn dish detergent straight out of the bottle do not dilute.
I used baking soda and vinegar to resolve the problem.
