Hi Megan. I'm Cindy. Turn all of the hangers in your closet so that they are all facing toward you. Give this project a time limit. (6 months would be great). Mark it on your calendar. Every time you wear something, turn the hanger back around to face away from you. Go back in your closet after the 6 months. All of the hangers that have not been turned around should come out and either give that item away or donate it. This method works well because it gives you a visual breakdown on the clothes you actually use. Hope this helps. Good luck Megan.

Sorry, Cindy ... this is brutal. To Megan - I have my closet organized by colors; long items like dresses on one end. I also wear multiple sizes and always regret when someone else convinces me to give away clothes just because I haven't worn it in awhile. If you really like it, keep it! I started collecting those hangers from stores that have a notch near the top where you could hang a matching skirt or pants ... and just hung the next top or sweater in that notch! I can go at least 4 items from top to bottom. It saved a ton of room in my closet and I didn't get rid of anything I liked. Dressing by rules like if you haven't worn it in in a year, get rid of it, just doesn't work for me.

  • You are not the only one. I have everything organized by item and by color regardless of size. I just pull something out and if it doesn't fit that day, I just put it back. Here is the trick. I mostly plan my work wardrobe out for the following week according to the weather. Then I am not struggling at 5 a.m. to find stuff to wear that fits properly. Giving things away just because I have not worn it in 6 months is ridiculous. What I wear in June is far different than what I wear in December. Who cares how old it is. I still wear a Liz Claiborne skirt I bought when I was in my late 20's and is older than the kids that work for me. Granted I do have a lot of clothes and I do get rid of things, as some of the items are now not age appropriate, might as well let someone else enjoy them or items I was gifted but were not that thrilled with in the first place.

    • Ah yes, living here in So Cal, we have less to be concerned with. I still own some "winter" type stuff for when I do need it, but not that much.

Have fun organizing your closet! When it is done, it will be so pretty! 🌞

You can use different color hangers for different sizes.

I organize my closet per what I'm currently wearing in colors and then I remove all the rest. So shirts are all together, same for pants, jackets and dresses.
