The easiest is to remove the shelving and spray paint with a paint made for metal.

This is a job most underestimate and go about wrong. This application is tricky for Spray paint goes through all the grilles. So you got 3 methods:

    A. Dip it in two phases in a Bath of Paint Letting both Coats thoroughly dry. Then if Sheen is unsatisfactory dip into a Transparent Topcoat like Polyurethane.

    B. Spray Paint on a Soft Buffing Cloth just like endusting them you apply Paint by the Rag.

    C. Give up on that idea and Paint Glass or 1-ply Wood that you Insert atop the Grilles.

    C is recommended.

B is far more difficult than A but always has less Dry On Drips than A.

With Method B: You Apply Top Down on the Item Uprighted and this results a Dulled Sheen effect for the Base Coat. Once dried, Coat 2 is only for Sheen and can be anything: Paint, Polyurethane, Vehicular Topcoat or Varnish.

This job is alot tougher than most percieve, but as you do need to wholly disassemble the wire shelves to paint them you can place these standing upright or sideways to Secure the Sheen by Topcoat over the dull basecoat.

Anyway you do this, this job is not a delight. Do not expect Factory Quality Results without a Kiln or Industrial upright oven to bake in as that is impossible even for the Pros in Restoration.
