How can I temporary close off a working area for warmth?

I have open consept living--kitchen room with stair way to basement and a outside doorway that is used on a regular basis. How do I stop the cold from pouring in ,or the heat escaping every time the door opens. I tried hanging a curtain looks awful can not permanently close off .we need both entrance use?? Please help me. Not sure if photos included or not

There are zippered doors & walls made of thick clear plastic for making a room in one’s garage.
They can “fasten” to the ceiling with the equivalent of spring loaded tension rods (like a shower curtain rod).
I’ll give you other ideas when we can see a picture.

Do you have a storm door beyond the exit door? Is your exit door adequately sealed for drafts on all sides? Is there excessive space under the base of the door permitting cold air to enter? If the door has glass, hang a thermal drapery to block the cold. The thicker the fabric, the more cold will be blocked.
Your open concept plan is permitting your heat to escape to other room spaces.
If you have a ceiling fan, run it in clockwise position on low speed.
If there is no door to basement level, you may evaluate installing one, if you feel a draft from that level. Insure garage access is tightly sealed and insulated.
Large windows can lose a great deal of heat. Install thermal draperies and added insulation, if possible.
If you have a two story foyer, they are known to significantly increase heating bills during Northeastern winters/cold areas of country, as your heat is rising to the ceiling.
A home with inadequate insulation and no carpeting will feel much colder. It's difficult to adequately address your situation without photos, but hopefully this will provide you with some areas to address.
