How to Grow Potatoes in a Trash Can

When I was younger, I heard stories of my husband’s great-grandpa growing potatoes in a metal trash can. I had never heard of this. I asked lots of questions, and then tried it myself. It worked better than I thought it would. Growing potatoes in a trash can or barrel allows you to produce a lot of food in a very small location.

I should imagine that potatoes would work very well in a bin as you have to pile the soil up around the stem of the plant as it grows in any case, so the fact that the plant is grown in a bin makes it easier to add more soil. Have seen them grown in potato sacks too and bales of hay. The best bit is you can just tip it out when they are ready and don't have to damage your back digging them out of the ground! Good for you for giving it a go!
