What is the best way of holding a piece of timber firmly to your work bench so you can use your router to cut a shape and patern into it?

I use wood clamps for all my projects, for smaller pieces I screw them into another larger piece of wood from the bottom where you will not see the screw holes.
The most difficult thing is to find not only a holder, but a bracket that will not spoil the wood or the surface, since you can remove this part for further work. I've tried toggle-clamps https://www.sandfieldengineering.com/toggle-clamps/ from a local manufacturer, but more often than not, I just attach a table and do mediocre things. If we talk about fasteners in general, it is better to look at those that can be dismantled during work and not only after its completion, since the installation of other fasteners may be needed in the process, so it is better to look at temporary holders for such cases. Check the dimensions of your desk and order a bracket that has additional mounts to hold thicker parts.
