I would go with the recommended distance between plants. The bigger a veggie plant gets, like tomatoes, need more distance since the canopy can be large and shade a plant. I always group similar sizes together so you know how big they will get and can perhaps plant them a little bit closer together. I put tomatoes in one area where they won't shade anything else too badly at the top of my garden and put winter squash on the other side of the top where they have plenty of room to grow and travel to the fence. I put cucumbers on the far side of the garden next to the fence where they get plenty of light and a fence to grow up. My pole beans are at the front of the garden where they have eight feet of fencing to grow up. I start my peppers about a foot and a half from the pole beans and about 12 to 18 inches apart depending on how many plants I have. My green beans go between the peppers and tomatoes and I leave about three feet between the tomatoes and beans, my tomato plants get huge! The green bean seeds I plant pretty close together, I can get more in and they give me great bounty each year that way. If I plant more than one kind of bush bean, I divide my rows in half and put about a foot between so that I can differentiate between them. I did green and yellow last year and it worked out perfect that way. I sometimes plant a few extra plants near my winter squash, I train them to go uphill to the fence, so they don't crowd out those plants and they do well. Plants will do well decreasing the space between by a little, but you have to make sure they can get enough room for their width and not shade each other out.
THE MORE THE BETTER IF THEY'RE SUPER HOT. We planted ours too close to the vegetables and ended up with hot lettuce, hot spinach, and...well, you get the point. After that, we planted our hot things about 30 feet from the veggies.
