How about adding a countertop over the machines? Here's one I made for cheap using plywood: https://www.charlestoncrafted.com/2017/10/18/orc-diy-plywood-countertop/
If you own front loaders, put them on plinths, to save your back. Install a pull down shelf or place a large folding table nearby.
Place shelves to the side of the machines for laundry supplies and to stack towels, if desired.
Make individual family member baskets for folded laundry, if desired.
Install LED lighting directly over the laundry space.
Install a pull down, expandable drying rack, if desired.
Install a fold down ironing board and storage place for iron, if this is where you prefer to iron.
