My front door is in need of new stain, can I just clean it let it dry then put the stain on or do I have to sand it all down first? Thanks!

Hi. There are polyurethanes that contain stain so a good cleaning is all that's needed. There is gel stain that lays on the surface (it will need to be sealed) that also only needs a cleaning. Then there is the sand and re-stain method. Depending on the condition your door's in will constitute what you do.

You will have to sand the sealer off first so the stain can absorb into the wood..if you have a Palm sander will take no time to do..good luck...

As long as the new stain color is the same color as what's presently on it, or a darker shade, you don't need to sand it. You only need to sand off the old if the new stain is a lighter shade as it won't cover the old darker stain color underneath.
