One of my neighbours had put this side table out for the dump. As you can see it was really 'blah' but it's also a solid peice of furniture. She said it was okay for me to take, so I did.

After a little while I decided to wallpaper and paint it.

Old ugly side table. Before.

To start the transformation I washed down the wood with sugar soap.

Took out the draws and removed the handles.

Lay out the draws on the back of the chosen wallpaper and draw around them. Cut out the shapes created.

I also did the same for the table top.

Next I painted the body, leaving the top paint free in order to wallpaper that part.

(If you paint an area you wish to wallpaper, the glue won't stick properly)

I used Frenchic - New Improved - Lazy Randge, Chalk Paint.

The only preparation needed for the painting was washing the unit in sugar soap. This paint does not require any fuss.

Honestly cannot recommend this stuff enough. It is a primer, paint and wax all in one. It's hard wearing, easy to paint with and reasonably priced.

I would recommend 3 coats especially in area's you feel make get knocked.

Between coats I started on the draw faces.

Remove handle

Using sand paper (manually or with a sander) rough the surface.

Wash the area down again removing the excess grit.

Once dry, apply a generous amout of modge podge glue over the entire surface. Line up the cut out over the draw. I used a kitchen utensil, but anything with a straight edge would work. Using the stright edge, work from one corner in a downward motion pushing all the air bubbles out.

Papered draw

Repeat on all draws.

Next stage is the top.

Sand the top of the unit, like you did for for the draws. Clean and dry the surface. When dry glue and over with wallpaper. Smooth out the air bubbles and coat in glue to seal and protect the paper. Coat twice allowing time to dry in between.

when sealing/coating the top pay a lot of attention to the edges and corners. Make make the glue covers the small area around them as not to peal off.

Tops coated

When dry, reapply the handles and reassemble.

Ta Da!

Then all that's left to do is style it.

I wonder if you could use a varnish or lacquer instead for the top coat? Love the look! What a way to customize for any décor.

Absolutely great job, but the word is “drawers”, not “draws”! lol

I LOVE the wallpaper! Can you tell me who makes it and the name of the pattern? Please and thanks!
