Real wood turns dark when exposed to heat. A white mark would indicate laminate.

Not true. Heat marks on wood turn white when the finish is compromised. Laminate can melt, brown, or burn.

White marks are common on real wood. One method is to apply Vaseline petroleum jelly, let sit a while, then scrub with a clean cloth. A friend swears by mayonnaise, used the same way. I have used a tiny bit of car wax, polished in and then buffed. You can also try one of the many good furniture polishes on the market.

Place a cloth over the mark. An iron set to medium and iron the cloth. May take a few passes. A dab of toothpaste on a damp cloth and gently rub in a circular motion.
