What are the best flowering perennials for a shade garden?
I just bought a cute little ranch on Long Island. Zone 7. The front of the house faces due north. The house shades about 20 feet. There are two pompus grasses that seem to be doing well and would like to keep the garden looking a little beach-like. From the front, the house looks like a bungalow, weathered gray, large windows and a wooden patio that looks like a beach walkway. Thanks Patti

impatiens
Hi Patti. I'm Cindy. Hostas are shade loving perennials and come in a lot of colors and sizes. They can also be split to make more plants with. I have several verigated hostas that I plan to split this Spring. Some other shade lovers are: Fanal Astilbe, Jacob's Ladder, and Bleeding Hearts. Ferns also do well in shade and have the beach theme that you are looking for. Good luck Patti.
Hosta, Impatiens.
Astilbe, Brunnera, Spiderwort. Acuba do not flower but have shades of yellow and green leaves.
