How do I build raised vegetable gardens?

I have used kiddie pools and wooden frames made with 1x8 boards. Both have done well, but I think I want something more permanent.

The only wood to use would be cedar as it naturally repells insects and water will not damage the wood. Railroad ties leach the petroleum product they were soaked in and you can't plant vegetables within 12 inches from them. Cinder blocks, brick, corrugated metal sheets, rocks (they make a nice rustic look), anything that will not rot away will work.

One of the easiest beds I have made: Home Depot has square concrete blocks with indentations on all 4 sides to slide boards into. I used 4 for an 4 x 8 ft bed. I think I used 3, 2 x 8 ft boards and cut one in half for the short sides. You could use any height boards you would like.
I used landscape timbers. They do the job very well. 2 layers will make it about 7 inches deep, 3 layers, about 10 lnches.I think you will like the results , just over lap the corners to stabilize and fasten the timbers together with 6 inch nails. Happy gardening .
