How do I fix a sink drain?

My bathroom sink doesn’t drain in the ordinary position but it drains when the stopper is pulled up and is higher than it should be.

Just a thought. But try pulling it out and clean around the stopper. Mine was doing the same thing and it had Hair trapped around it🤔

Ther is no "ordinary" position. The stopper is adjusted so it closes to hold water in the sink and opened to drain the water. Yours may need adjusting. It may close to hold water but doesn't open enough to drain the water.

If it drained correctly before there is a clog some where. It could be in the elbow, clean that out. It may even be the stack where the gases are vented on the roof. If that gets clogged or closed off it will slow your drains.

Another thing to check is you may not have enough of a downward slant from the elbow out. In our home I've noticed the elbows can slip down a bit off the sink connection. Loosen that big nut on the top of the elbow and push it up until it stops on the sink drain (there is a lip in the elbow). Then tighten that nut back up. Our cabinets are so stuffed I'm fairly sure while trying to get things out the pipe gets pulled occasionally and if the drain slows that's usually the problem.
