We are re-staining our wood cabinets in our kitchen however the backboard is laminate, can we sand that down to re-stain that too?

I am assuming you are talking about the inside backboard of the cupboard. Laminate is real thin and you may go through it sanding it enough to get the stain off. Perhaps clean up the backboard and put on contact paper that is a good match to the stain you are using. Another idea would be to paint the backboard a light color or perhaps a color that will go with the décor you are using in the kitchen.

You really can't stain laminate but you can paint it a shade of brown that will tie in with your cabinet.

Take one of the cabinet doors to the paint department of the home improvement store and ask them to select paint/stains and other finishes and application tools that will work for your kitchen. They have the best selection, the most up-to-date materials and most important, the most informative sales staff to get you what you need for a professional job.
