There are different levels and different ways of 'antiquing' a piece of furniture. You can simply lightly sand a painted piece to remove some of the top layer of paint where it would have naturally been worn away with years of use. You can go over that sanded piece with a tinted glaze or tinted paste wax to add a darkened layer for more depth.
