Vinegar, boiling water, salt, all of them will kill anything that it touches. The only way to not kill grass, is to get it only on the weed leaves and nothing else. You have to be very careful, perhaps using a paint brush to get the weed leaves only. If you saturate the ground, it will absorb into the soil and affect the roots of the surrounding grass. With care, you should be able to get only the weeds. Otherwise, Roundup has one that doesn't affect grass. Despite the news, it is safe for the casual user with precautions to not get it onto your skin. Wear gloves at least. The people who got cancer from it worked with it for years on a daily basis in lawn and landscaping and never used precautions. The casual user should be fine. Once it is dry, it does not affect pets or humans or even other plants, most are safe to plant within hours to a few days. I like the one that you can choose between a spray or foam, the foam is easy to get where you want it and it sticks to the weeds real well. That is what I use unless it is a large area that doesn't have grass or close by plants I would kill with the vinegar.
