best chemical and tools to refinish interior staircase? [good condition, but some old stains discovered when removing old runner...]

    Gail, Start with Murphy's oil soap, which is for wood, you can buy in the supermarket. If you have stains, after you wash the wood, let it dry completely. Old English has 2 stains, one light and one dark. You can also purchase in the supermarket. If your stairs are a light color wood, use the light color stain. Try to blend the liquid, into the stain, so it's not noticeable. If this doesn't work, you might have to sand it lightly, then use the Old English stain. Aloha!

  • I would just use a mild deterrent and warm water. And re oil wood to rehydrate wood.
