Use off white chalk paint. There is a spray chalk paint. Has held up well on chairs used by a family. Could table top be refinished to keep it wood? Look at magazine pictures. Maybe painting it some outrageous color would bring it to life. Don't be afraid! Or, black enamel for a contemporary look. Wish I could see a picture of your set.
