Is it possible to use the brown paper technique on a vinyl floor?

It would be better to take the vinyl up first so there is no reaction between vinyl and product being used and then put down an underlayment.If it is a vinyl that is glued down may be a little extra work, but, there are vinyl that loose laid that may not be fully glued down which would make it easier.
I would think you'd need to rough up the vinyl or it would eventually peel and come off the floor, at least in higher traffic areas. You can always do a test patch. Sand it and do the technique and see how to stands up.
