Patty, to take up the carpeting is It glued down or stapled? If it’s stapled around the edges you can take a screwdriver and pop up to Staples if it is glued down you’ll need a strong spatula scraper. The construction type not cooking. Ha ha.
Goof off is a liquid product that takes off gummed items if it’s stuck. And it smells terrible so use lots of fresh air and gloves.
They make a product to help loosen up adhesive but you will probably still need a good scraper.If you have a sawsall tool they have blades that can be used.

Do you know what the surface is underneath the carpet? Also, sometimes depending on how long the carpet has been in place, and what is has been glued down with, the backing can disintegrate in the removal process. Trying to completely get all the leftover bits of backing can be difficult.
If you don't know what it's covering, check into it. It might be covering flooring with asbestos in it. Pulling it out will likely disturb the asbestos. If it's over wood or concrete, the previous suggestions are great. Good luck!
