What's the best thing for backyard privacy?

I have a 2 story house behind me and am looking for the best combination of tree/ plants to use for privacy, beauty and low maintenance. I live in Jacksonville, FL and was thinking about Bamboo plants ( clumping ) but have heard they attract rats - don't want that! I also have a pool and do not want anything that sheds dramatically. I was also thinking about fruit trees but I have no experience in that either :( Some guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Clumping bamboo does not attract rats. Fruit trees may attract all types of wildlife if the downed fruit is not picked up regularly. Citrus in Florida is easy to grow. Contact your local Ag Extension for best suggestions for evergreens in your area. These sites will get you started. Fig trees grow fast and while they do drop leaves in late fall, they are large and easy to rake up. Might be something to consider.

In the meantime you might add a screen and/or pergola next to the pool while you are waiting for trees to grow 2 stories high.

I planted 2 small arborviate trees several years ago. They now stand about 10 feet tall and 5 feet wide. Make sure you leave enough room between them for them to fill out. I made the mistake of planting a holly bush between them Didn't realize how big the holly bush or the arborvitaes would grow!
