How to know the time to trim a tree?

I need to remove some large limbs from a tree and I want to know the right time of the year to do this

All depends in what type of tree you have. What trees are in your yard?
Most trees should be prune in late winter.
Now when tree is dormant is best; if it's citrus they do not go dormant so best to do them when growth has slowed down
Deciduous trees can be pruned when dormant (no leaves). If it's a flowering tree, it's best to trim it right after it flowers. I prune pines and conifirs late winter
