How to refinish furniture without stripping?

Is there a new product I read about to avoid stripping? Not chalk paint. This was a product you painted on before putting your paint on. Thanks.

    Are you painting or refinishing?

Unless the current finish is bad or I want to stain, I don't usually strip. You can scuff the current finish with fine steel wool. Clean with TSP or denatured alcohol. Prime with Kilz or Zinsser. Paint - I've used all kinds of paint for furniture except chalk paint.

I use a liquid sander to 'dull' the finish and give better 'tooth' for new paint to adhere -- I use JASCO brand -- no odor, no rinse; use soft cloth to get into all the nooks/crannies; Denatured Alcohol/water does a great job of removing spray waxes/cleaners, nicotine residue, general crud. Then follow with the liquid sander ....
