Not sure, but I would think the tongue and groove would be easier to do upside down ( without taking th tiles down)

What is over the tile ceiling. Is it wood? Is it a drop ceiling?

It depends on how the tiles are applied. If it is a drop ceiling, you will need to take it down. It sounds like your tiles might be attached to the sheetrock/plaster ceiling with construction adhesive. If so, you will need to install strapping that is nailed/screwed through the tile and sunk into the joists and then attach your ceiling material (whatever you choose) to that. You could attach your ceiling material directly to the joists, but that is generally not the best way to do it because your ceiling may not be flat and will look wavy with another layer of material.

If they are solid on the ceiling no problem. You may need to use longer nails in the nail gun or by hand.

Yes, as long as they are installed correctly and aren't actually a drop acoustic ceiling. Any of your ideas would be lovely.
