Pour baking soda into the toilet bowl

Pour a cup of baking soda onto the stained areas of the toilet bowl, and allow the baking soda to remain undisturbed for several minutes. Scrub with a toilet brush to remove odors and surface stains.

Scour the toilet with a pumice stone

Pumice stones are used to remove difficult stains, such as buildup caused by minerals in the home's water supply. Wear gloves, and gently scrub the stained areas with the stone to remove lime scales and other mineral buildup. Flush the toilet to remove any particles in the bowl.

    Prevent additional stains

Toilet stains are common in homes with hard water. To prevent new stains, add a cup of vinegar to the bowl, and allow it to remain for an hour. Flush the toilet, add 1/2 cup of Borax to the toilet bowl, and allow it to remain overnight. The next morning, clean the toilet bowl with a brush, and flush to remove the Borax.
