Can I put a dark wax on a pre-made white cabinet to tone it down?

Is it wood or laminate ? Talk to the guy at the paint store about wax vs glaze. I've painted and glazed cabinets before and it came out great.
If the cabinet is wood it should work. If it's laminate, plastic paper similar to contact paper, or a shiney surface it won't work. The wax will just "float" on the surface and won't harden.
If you have the dark wax handy try a small area and see how it turns out. Let the wax dry for a while. Then see if it wipes off easily.

It's very vague representation. There is wood just laminate finish. Semantics! I don't know if TSP would remove the gloss. Lightly sand it with a fine sandpaper (200 grit) or a green kitchen scrubby to dull the finish and try a small area with the dark wax. Good Luck.
Wax requires re-application. Doesn’t last long. I would buy a glaze and it’s easier to apply. I would practice on a small area to add color like you want. Make sure cabinets are clean.
