How do you change a shower tub valve?

Have a 70s one piece shower tub that has 3 holes for faucet. Would like to put a one handle valve in for the water control, how can it be done?

This would mean turning the water off, getting into the wall, removing the old valve, redoing the plumbing to fit a single handle valve. Also the plumbing to the shower head coming off the new valve would need to be modified. If you are not familiar with plumbing too much this would be a job for a plumber.

This can be done, I've had it done in two bathrooms. The plumber will have to break open the wall, change the tub valve, then cover it over. There are special "cheater plates" that are sold to cover the holes created. It's well worth it, especially if the old faucet valves are no longer repairable.
