How can you update a fireplace with a Heatilator insert?
We don't use it anymore. Don't need it with gas logs. It's an eyesore but can't be removed because it's built in a stone fireplace.

Can you post a photo? I would remove the heating element, and use the fireplace itself with candles and mirrors.
If you can't remove it, then maybe you can make a DIY fireplace screen like some one of these ideas: https://www.homedit.com/diy-fireplace-screen/ I really like the ones that repurpose things like old windows and radiator screen. Or if you like a more modern look, they show one that looks like stacked logs.
