Using a garage is BEST option.

Some cities have alternating days coinciding with house numbers when they plow so this would be huge factor. Side of street that windshield would be facing into sun to help melt off heavy snow & ice(of course doesn't help if you leave before sun comes up). Side closest to your house so you do not have to walk on ice or in snow any farther than you need risking a fall. I've lived in Ohio.Ind,Ill,Wis,areas and man oh man do not miss the ice, snow and cold as hell winds from Great Lakes area; I live in desert/AZ now. I do miss the Fall smells and the lush green of Spring & Summer but not the humidity either!

If no garage or carport, at least purchase a windshield cover and use it regularly.

If you're sufficiently motivated, purchase a car cover, and tie it down, to prevent high winds blowing it off the car. Ice and snow readily fall off these covers.
