How do I winterize bottom of air conditioner (inside)?

To start, I have a cover on the outside. But the problem is that I cannot use plastic sheeting on the inside, (as I have in the past) because the hammering into the plastic frame would disturb the wall that’s already compromised underneath. (I do have it covered with an air conditioner cover, foam and stretchy sheet, but the bottom part of the sheet bellows out no matter how hard it’s tied, or pulled).**We had to get a new air conditioner last summer, which caused this problem!

Connect a couple of bungee cords together end to end until they are long enough to tightly go around the AC covers.

I can do that, but it doesn’t take care of the sheet rock that’s slightly pushed in at a very small at the bottom. I’m trying to come up with a square to cover the area, without causing further damage to the wall.

It sounds like you may have a gap around the edges of the AC unit that didn't get sealed when the new unit was installed. You shouldn't need to cover the inside of the unit if the outside is covered and insulated. In fact, the inside heat should help protect the unit from getting damaged due to freezing outside.

      The smell goes away quickly.

PLASTIC WRAP used for foods in the kitchen. Stretch some of it around your vacant spot. Use more than needed at the ends & let them hang. Use a blow dryer to shrink it in place. It will act like shrink wrap when exposed to the heat. Good Luck
