Has anyone ever painted over rusty metal and then used milk paint?

Has anyone ever painted over rusty metal and then used milk paintto get a chippy effect to reveal the rusty metal? I have a piece of metal that I want to make a sign with but I am afraid I will ruin it if i don't do it correctly.Thank you for your helpMary

    You can always strip it if you don't like it. All water based paints will cause rust and chip off.

    I believe you can spray with a Rust-Oleum product to stop the rust and the paint!!!

    Yes! I did on an old milk can. I did scrub off some of the rust with a wire brush first. I used General Finishes paint and painted over it, then sanded back where the rust was (with 120 grit) to reveal some rust and get the look I wanted!
